“Walk to end violence against Women and Children a HUGE Success”
St. Catharines, On (June 8, 2015) – Gillian’s Place is excited to announce the results of the 3rd Annual “Walk for Women” event presented by Meridian Credit Union. With a record high 36 teams registered and over 200 walkers, $50,000 (net) was raised at the walk to end violence against women and girls!!
The walk which took place on Saturday June 6th along the scenic Welland Canal Parkway included a 5km and 2km walk option and was dedicated to the memory of Judith Fraser. Her family and friends participated in the walk with team, “Healing Hearts”. Signs along the walk depicted a journey that a women facing abuse may go through and how Gillian’s Place can help. It was an inspiring and encouraging walk empowering all women who took part and all funds went to support the work of Gillian’s Place. New this year, walkers were encouraged to leave a message of hope as part of the “Chain of Hope” that was strung across the finish line and will later be displayed in the shelter to encourage the women and children staying at Gillian’s Place. The chain was a unique way of linking everyone together.

All proceeds from the event will go directly to helping women and children through the services Gillian’s Place offers. The walk for women was an opportunity for women and children of all ages in the community to join together to say with a unified voice that woman abuse is unacceptable and to take a stand against violence against women and girls!
Gillian’s Place is the only organization in Niagara dedicated to providing safe shelter and a full range of support services including 24-hour support counselling, safety planning, emotional support, legal advice and transitional assistance for abused women and their children from Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Thorold, and West Lincoln.
