Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
Recently, feminism has been a hot topic of conversation, with many celebrities either declaring themselves as feminists, or outright denouncing their feminism. This is not an ugly word. This is not a word exclusive to women. We know many men who are feminists. Feminism is about empowering women, not shaming men. Many believe that we don’t need feminism – that women are already equal. Although women and girls in Canada have come a long way in the last few decades, far too many are still trapped by violence, poverty, and rigid stereotypes that limit their potential. Women face different kinds of economic and social challenges.
To start a discussion about our differences and the challenges/successes we face as women, Gillian’s Place has launched the #BecauseIAmAWoman social media campaign. Join the conversation on Twitter and tell us what being a woman means to you, and join us at Walk for Women on June 6th to help end Violence Against Women.
