9th Annual Walk a Mile in HER Shoes raises $88,000 for Gillian's Place
Gillian’s Place challenged men to Walk a Mile in HER Shoes presented by TD Canada Trust on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at The Pen Centre, St. Catharines with over 240 walkers raising $88,000 in support of Gillian’s Place.
The pledged walk is a symbolic gesture of men marching in female footwear to better understand the experiences of abused women and to help raise funds in support of Gillian’s Place. Men could bring their own shoes or choose a pair off of the Shoe Rack. Food was provided by Zehrs Market, as well as entertainment including face painting and a magician for the children.
Brand new Golden Shoe awards were handed out including the golden shoe awards for the most of amount of money raised by an adult and youth individual as well as highest pledged team. The winners were as follows:
Highest Pledged Individual Mark Cressman raised $4329; The highest pledged team TD Canada Trust Niagara raised an astounding $25,080 a new record for a team; and the highest Youth Individual Stephen Bodner brought in $375.
Other notables were Peter Huebert from Investor’s Group $3370 and Joel Hannigan from JFHannigan Photography $3325. Larry Kent from TD Canada Trust $2855 and Don Treschak from Team Treschak raising $2645. With 28 teams registered and walking Gillian’s Place would like to recognize the efforts of the following teams: the St. Catharines Standard raising an amazing $5209; Arif Merani’s Army $4677; Team Treschak $4205 and the Royal Pumps raising $4130.
The Pen Centre was packed with hundreds of spectators who cheered them on along the route.

Gillian’s Place is the largest organization providing essential support services for abused women and their children from Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Thorold, and West Lincoln. These services include 24-hour support counseling, safe shelter, safety planning, emotional support, legal advice and transitional assistance. The programs and services Gillian’s Place provides help abused women and their children with the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Abused women who never stay at our shelter to benefit from the free and confidential services offered. All services are free, completely confidential, and available to all women 16 and over. Gillian’s Place also works diligently to provide public education and raise community awareness on the issue of violence against women.
