Gillian’s Place fourth annual Walk for Women event was a huge success.  On Saturday, June 4th, 200 women and children came together to raise $40,000, which will go toward ensuring that abused women and girls in St. Catharines and North Niagara have a safe haven and the support they need to escape abuse.

The walk took place along the scenic Welland Canals Parkway, and was dedicated to Ashley Simpson, a St. Catharines native who is currently missing from her British Columbia home, and whose family and friends walked nineteen members strong as Team Ashley. Signs along the walk route captured stories of women and their journeys to healing and hope at Gillian’s Place.

Prizes were awarded to top fundraisers:

Sara Theroux who raised $3150

Team GP Sole Sisters who raised $4095

Team Ashley won the award for most team spirit.

Gillian’s Place Community Development Manager, Nicole Regehr, was the emcee for the day, noting “With one in four women suffering abuse in her lifetime, today we say with a unified voice that violence against women is unacceptable. We will not stop until our vision of an end to violence against women and children is a reality!”

Participants enjoyed an inflatable bouncer, lunch provided by Roberto’s Pizza Passion, water along the route by H2Only and DJ services by Chamberlain Entertainment. Gillian’s Place would like to thank their many sponsors, volunteers and committee members for their support and dedication to a successful event.

Gillian’s Place offers safe shelter and a full range of support services including 24-hour support counselling, safety planning, emotional support, legal advice and transitional assistance for abused women and their children living in Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Thorold, and West Lincoln. Gillian’s Place also works diligently to provide public education and raise community awareness on the issue of violence against women.
